Best Trip Tips: Kids Wearing Costumes
With the popularity of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, many children dress up in princess gowns and pirate costumes for their day at Disney. There are girls and boys wearing make-up, wigs, up-dos and costumes. Having a princess loving fashionista in our family, I knew she would admire the other little girls surrounding her and wish she was doing the same. Having performed the majority of my life I know how hot and sticky make-up and an up-do can be. Also, the idea of wearing a full-blown gown with an itchy crinoline did not appeal to me so why would it appeal to her. I knew it would drive her crazy by the end of the day, or the beginning of the day for that matter. I didn’t want this to hamper our daughter’s experience. But I also didn’t want her to miss out on this aspect of her day at the Magic Kingdom. So we came up with a game plan that would allow her to dress up like a princess for a period of time and return to regular summer clothing. The day we headed to the Magic Kingdom to meet Elsa I brought her Elsa costume with us. An Elsa costume I purchased her at home and my mother-in-law kindly altered to make it most comfortable for our little princess. She was dressed in a tee and shorts, while waiting in line to meet Elsa and Anna I put her costume over top of her regular clothing. She got to meet Elsa and Anna while dressed as Elsa.
After our character experience she was quite content taking off her Elsa costume and carrying on with our day. She understood that the dressing up happened while she met Elsa and then it was over. I never heard about it again for the rest of our trip. It was like the experience had been checked off our list and it never crossed her mind again. At a place that has so much going on and there are many opportunities for meltdowns to occur you want to control the aspects you can. I saw this as one of those chances. I would do this again. The costume did take up a lot of room in our bag for the day but I would trade room for a meltdown any day.
